The History of Power In Sisters – Sister Power

A Movement Rooted in Sisterhood, Purpose, and Empowerment
In the heart of Washington, D.C., amidst the hustle of a vibrant city, a visionary dream took shape. As a Girl Scout planning for her Gold Award, Sister Niemah Karen Gaal, driven by her deep love for community, faith, and the indomitable spirit of women empowerment, recognized a profound need: a safe space where women from all walks of life and all ages could come together to uplift, empower, and support one another. She earned her Gold Award by showing how she could bring this goal to fruition. In 1995, Sister Niemah began her journey with those closest to her in Sister Circles. With the support and encouragement of her beloved Mother Teresa, Power In Sisters – Sister Power was born— a movement that redefined the meaning of sisterhood and collective strength.

Join Us in Championing Safety and Community Growth

Our Mission

Empowering women of all ages and backgrounds to break barriers, build communities, and shape futures through collective strength, leadership, and philanthropy. We strive in service by supporting meaningful causes related to public safety, community development, education, health and wellness, social betterment, and human and civil rights with our chapters throughout the United States and 11 other countries.

The Spark That Ignited a Movement

The journey began with a simple but powerful belief: that when women stand united, they can change the world. Sister Niemah Karen Gaal envisioned a network that transcended barriers of race, faith, and background—a sisterhood that celebrated diversity while nurturing individual and collective growth. With her roots in community leadership and activism, she drew inspiration from her childhood, the rich traditions of African American resilience, Islamic teachings of service, and the principles of unity embodied by her service to all mankind and merits in leadership.

What started as intimate gatherings of like-minded women soon blossomed into a thriving organization. These early meetings were filled with shared stories, heartfelt prayers, and bold ideas for change. Women left these sessions feeling inspired, equipped with tools to lead in their communities, and strengthened by the knowledge that they were not alone.

Celebrating Diversity and Empowerment
